He thinks that either Pokemon Pearl or Diamond would be a good DS bet. They're pretty similar and have fewer options and things to learn than the later releases.
His younger sister was about 8 1/2 or 9 when she started playing it, and didn't have any trouble playing the actual game, though she did have trouble beating it. These are kind of RPG games he says.
He says that for the N64 (I don't know if you have one handy or not) two games that would be good for a kid that age might be Pokemon Snap or Hey You Pikachu (though the latter requires a microphone and some sort of adapter to play).
